This December Duncan Lewis Solicitors will join Shelter for a 10km fundraising walk through London to combat homelessness and support those living in bad housing. The idea is to embark on a 10km loop through central London in the cold weather to raise awareness of homelessness and impending homelessness.
People become homeless for many different reasons. There are social causes of homelessness, such as a lack of affordable housing, poverty and unemployment and life events which cause individuals to become homeless. Homelessness is devastating, dangerous and isolating. People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence and are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population.
Our housing department assist clients with homelessness and threat of homelessness on a daily basis. We have innumerable clients visiting our offices and calling in everyday stating they are currently street homeless. Many of these people are street homeless with their children or are vulnerable due mental and medical health conditions. The Council is limited in resources to house and assist many of these people.
As the cold weather looms, these people will be left to fend for themselves, endure the bad weather and may even develop further medical conditions.
Leading the charity walk, Housing Director Manjinder Kaur Atwal will be walking with her team; Amrita Bharj, Rumi Ahmed, Juste Raipaite, Agnieszka Marks, Daniel Bolster, Anjalee Ranawaka and Janette Plumer.
