The Exeter Private Rental Forum is holding a drop-in event for private sector rental tenants today (26/10/15), for renters who want to know more about their rights.
Exeter Private Rental Forum is a partnership of key housing organisations in Exeter, who are dedicated to improving standards of private rented properties.
The drop-in event will be held in Bedford Square, Princesshay in Exeter between 11am and 2pm – and housing experts from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Young Devon, Exeter City Council’s Housing Advice and the charity Plymouth Access to Housing (PATH) will be available to answer queries.
Free information and resource sheets for tenants will be available to take away – and a stall will provide details of resources are available to rental tenants and where to turn to for help and advice.
There will be information on tenants’ rights, responsibilities and general housing advice.
Exeter Council’s Lead Councillor for Customer Access, Councillor Morris, said:
“The number of people renting privately is growing, as house prices increase and social housing reduces.
“The lack of supply of housing also means the cost of renting in the private sector has increased.
“The Exeter Private Rental Forum aims to support and inform local tenants, to give them a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities – and also where to go for information and advice if things go wrong.”
In August, The Office for National Statistics (ONS) index of private housing rental prices revealed that, in the last 12 months, private sector rents rose by 2.5% across England.
Responding to the release of the figures, director of Generation Rent, Betsy Dillner, said:
“As more people find themselves stuck renting, runaway rents will drag the economy down.
“Ministers urgently need to ramp up their investment in new homes – and bring in rent controls to lower the cost of living for all.”
Housing charity Shelter’s chief executive, Campbell Robb, added:
“When families are losing nearly half their income on sky-high rents each month, with barely anything left over to save, how does the government expect to deliver their promise of ‘a home of your own’ for ordinary people?
“The answer is simple – only when politicians invest in building the genuinely affordable homes we so desperately need will they turn this crisis around once and for all.“
