Doncaster Council has announced that a development of 11 affordable bungalows will be built for people aged over 50, as a result of a grant by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The new homes are to be delivered by the Housing Association, Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust (JJHT).

The development is part of the council’s ongoing Affordable Housing Programme. Funding is through a combination of the Homes and Communities Agency grant, funding allocated from Doncaster Council’s Capital Programme – and the Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust’s own finance.

It is anticipated that the new scheme will inject a £1.24 million investment into the area.

Land at Edwin Road in Woodlands has been earmarked for the development of 11 two-bedroom, self-contained bungalows. The homes have been designed specifically to meet the needs of older people and will incorporate a number of energy efficiency and sustainable design features, including energy efficient boilers and thermally efficient windows, doors and insulation.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said:

“We are looking forward to work getting underway on the new housing in Woodlands.

“The development is part of our commitment to providing good quality, modern housing provision that meets the needs of everyone in our community.

“This is another development which offers suitable accommodation for our increasing ageing population – and follows hot on the heels of construction work starting on a high-quality, extra-care scheme for older people in Thorne last month.”

JJHT will manage and maintain the new homes, which will be let at an affordable rent to people on the St Leger Homes waiting list.

A planning application for the new housing is due for submission at the end of March and – subject to the necessary approvals – construction is expected to start in August or September 2017.
