Colchester Council has said that the first tenants to move into council homes in the town for 20 years are due to take possession of their new homes.

Dash24.com reports that Colchester Council is currently building new council homes at Holborough Close in Greenstead, with the first of 34 new homes to be completed across the borough nearing completion.

The first of the new council tenants will move into three of the 34 homes to be built.

The council’s portfolio holder for housing, Councillor Tina Bourne said:

“This really is a landmark occasion. These are the first homes the council has built in over 20 years.

“We are committed to tackling the housing shortage while providing new homes for local people – and this is something the council has received national recognition for.

“I look forward to seeing the completion of our other homes soon.”

Colchester council says that all its new council homes will be fitted with energy efficiency measures to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes (level 4) – including PV solar panels. The new council homes in Colchester will also feature gardens and off-road parking for tenants.

Chief executive of Colchester Borough Homes (CBH), Greg Falvey, said:

“This is a very special day and I’m very proud that we can offer some new quality and decent homes to the people who need them.

“I hope these new homes give our tenants many years of happiness.”

The council house project in Colchester was made possible as a result of the redevelopment of five council-owned garage sites, which were identified as suitable for development into social housing.

In 2014, Colchester Council launched a “Call for Sites” consultation as an opportunity for individuals and organisations to suggest sites for development in Colchester.

The council said that the Call for Sites initiative would inform the development of Colchester's new Local Plan.

In February, there is another Call for Sites to inform the borough’s Local Plan – and the council says it is looking for all sites which can accommodate development of any kind, including housing, employment, gypsy and traveller pitches and leisure sites.

“Sites can be greenfield sites or previously developed sites,” says the council – including previously developed sites or brownfield land; or can be developed land which is “underused, no longer suitable for purpose, or that could be suitable for redevelopment”.

The council has opened the consultation on sites suitable for development to members of the public, as well as parish councils, agents, developers and landowners who may have sites suitable for council redevelopment.

This year’s call for sites ends on 27 February.
