Cambridge City Council is proposing to spend £719,363 to prevent people becoming homeless – and will discuss the plan at the Council’s Housing Scrutiny Committee on Thursday, 22 September.

A report published in advance of the council’s Housing Scrutiny Committee proposes allocating grants to a number of local organisations working to prevent homelessness in the city.

Grants for 2017-2018 – which are subject to the council’s overall budget being agreed next February – are earmarked for a number of projects, including Cambridge Cyrenians (£13,094), which provides services to homeless people in need of support.

Other recipients of the proposed funding include Cambridge Citizens Advice Bureau (£32,557), which works to provide independent specialist housing advice; Wintercomfort (£91,628) for its five-year learning and development service for single homeless or formerly homeless people; Cambridge Women’s Aid (£46,446), which offers an outreach service for women and children fleeing domestic violence; Jimmy’s Cambridge (£53,294) for its assessment centre for rough sleepers – plus a further £25,658 towards severe weather emergency provision for rough sleepers.

Centre 33 (£31,181) will also be considered for funding for its advice and advocacy service for young people threatened with homelessness – and other groups set to receive funding include YMCA, CHS Group, Riverside English Churches Housing Group, and the county council for work on excluded adults and tackling alcohol abuse.

Additionally, the council will take on street-based, anti-social behaviour work from the police – and bring this activity alongside initiatives being led by the Safer Communities team, to support people begging on the streets.

Cambridge City Council’s Executive Councillor for Housing, Councillor Kevin Price, said:

“This money is intended to help some of the most vulnerable people in our city, who face the dreadful prospect of living on the streets.

“We have a shortage of housing in Cambridge – and, sadly, homelessness has increased in the past five years or so.

“We believe that one of the best ways of tackling it is to help people to avoid becoming homeless in the first instance.

“As well as helping people who are already homeless, our proposed grants programme will support organisations that offer people help to develop skills, learn, and train for employment opportunities.”

Cllr Price will decide whether to approve the grants, subject to the council’s budget setting process, at Housing Scrutiny Committee on 22 September.
