Duncan Lewis, Housing Solicitors, Cambridge City Council reassures tenants over fire safety

Cambridge City Council is reminding council tenants and leaseholders of the fire safety measures and procedures in place at council homes, following the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

The council manages and maintains more than 7,000 homes in Cambridge, including blocks of flats, sheltered housing, temporary housing, as well as detached and semi-detached houses – and says that it has strict fire safety measures in place to protect people living in them, with a rolling programme of fire risk assessments for properties.

In the last five years, the council says it has invested more than £2 million in fire safety within its purpose-built blocks of flats.

Cambridge City Council Executive Councillor for Housing, Cllr Kevin Price, expressed the council’s sympathies for those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire and added:

“We take the safety of our tenants and leaseholders very seriously – we regularly review our fire safety measures and plans and have invested to improve fire safety at our properties in recent years.

“We work closely with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue service – and will work with them to take on board any learning from this dreadful incident and revised guidance that may emerge.”

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has said that it is ready to provide support or advice to social housing providers and local authorities on ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) cladding on housing blocks.

Following the Grenfell Tower fire, the government is asking local authorities and other registered providers of social housing to identify whether any panels used in new build or refurbishments are a particular type of cladding made of ACM.

Housing providers requiring HCA support should contact responsesupport@hca.gsi.gov.uk.
