A mother who first fell pregnant when she was 15 says that the benefits system makes it “pointless” for her to work – and she is now encouraging her two daughters to “work the system”.
Sinead Clarkson, 36, from Rochdale in Lancashire told the Daily Mail that her eldest daughter aged 19 is now pregnant. Ms Clarkson has been claiming benefits for the last 20 years and receives £1,200 a month. She admits she encouraged her daughter to fall pregnant so she could claim benefits and get her own house.
Ms Clarkson says:
“I am better off on benefits. I refuse to work for a pittance and struggle. I don't have any qualifications so it is easier to claim money than persuade an employer to give me a job.”
When her daughter gives birth in July, Ms Clarkson says she will be entitled to a further £400 a month in benefits. Ms Clarkson says her daughter will also be given a two-bedroom council house. Her younger daughter aged 12 is now “showing signs” of wanting to follow the example of her mother and elder sister, Ms Clarkson claims.
However, she says that, although some people will be angry at her lifestyle, the system is to blame for making it more worthwhile for her to stay at home on benefits rather than work.
“I know people will be angry with my choices, but they should not judge. It is the system's fault that I can choose not to work. What is the point of having a job if I can't earn much more than I get now?”
