40% increase in London evictions in just two years, says Shelter (2 February 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Housing Solicitors, 40% increase in London evictions in just two years, says Shelter

New research by housing charity Shelter has revealed that more than 31,000 people living in London are under threat of eviction.

The charity examined data from the Ministry of Justice and found that within one period of three months there were more than 12,500 households at risk of eviction in London, which Shelter says is the equivalent of 31,313 tenants in the rental sector.

Shelter says that its helpline staff answer an average of 300 calls a month from tenants in London who are facing eviction, representing a 40% increase in threatened evictions in just two years.

The housing charity says that in 2015, it is expected more tenants will be facing eviction by landlords in the private housing and social housing sectors as a result of “sky-high” rents, short-term tenancies which are unstable – and welfare changes, which have left some families on a financial “knife-edge”.

Shelter is hosting a fund raising initiative in March called Vertical Rush, at Tower 42 – billed as the UK’s “toughest tower-running challenge”.

Participants are being asked to will race up the 932 steps of the London skyscraper Tower 42 on Tuesday, 3 March.

Chief executive of Shelter, Campbell Robb said:

“Being told that you could lose your home is a frightening reality for anyone – and it’s happening to thousands of Londoners every week.

“As the capital’s chronic shortage of affordable homes continues to push rents sky high, it’s getting harder and harder for families to keep a roof over their heads – and when the worst happens, Shelter is often the only place where people can turn for help.

“Our advisers can be the difference between a family losing their home and keeping it.

“That’s why we’re asking Londoners to take on the tower, get fit – and help us raise vital funds so that we can be there for everyone who needs us.”

The general manager of Tower 42, Barry Rushmer, added:

“For the seventh consecutive year, Tower 42 is proud to be hosting this fantastic fundraiser.

“Vertical Rush is the biggest tower-running challenge in London – and we hope that Shelter will again achieve its fundraising targets.

“The housing shortage is a serious issue – and with a record number of people facing homelessness in the capital this year, Shelter’s work has never been more critical.”
