Date: 11/04/2022
Duncan Lewis, Family Solicitors, Welcoming Newly Promoted Family and Child Care Director Genet Amare

We are delighted to announce that Genet Amare has stepped up to the role of Family and Child Care director at Duncan Lewis Solicitors after winning a well-deserved promotion.

Genet is based at our City of London office where she will continue to serve our clients with the sensitivity, understanding and tenacity that many of them are already accustomed to.

Genet joined Duncan Lewis in October 2011 as a caseworker and qualified as a solicitor in January 2016, before becoming a member of the Children Law Accreditation Scheme in August 2019. Since such time, Genet has supervised and overseen a team of trainees and caseworkers.

She has gone from strength to strength, building her confidence and knowledge and now undertakes the majority of her own advocacy and trains paralegals/trainees to do the same.

Genet has extensive experience in private law children matters and public law cases involving multiple complex elements including non-accidental injuries, child sexual exploitation, secure accommodation orders, physical and sexual abuse, and mental health issues. With Duncan Lewis she has conducted numerous wardship / child abduction matters and cases that involve an international element. She has considerable experience representing parents, extended family members and interveners, and has conducted cases on behalf of the official solicitor.

Her private law children work has been varied, including matters relating to residence, contact, and disputes over issues such as schooling and medical treatment and relocation out of the jurisdiction. She has good experience of representing those who have numerous contested applications in private family law, including non-molestation orders, occupation orders, child arrangements orders, and a transfer of tenancy. Interestingly, she has also successfully made applications for a S91 (14) Children Act 1989 – a barring act – a rare and draconian order prohibiting a parent from making repeated and unreasonable applications for contact without seeking the court’s permission.

Genet is frequently praised in the courts for going above and the call of duty to support her clients and obtain them the desired result. She is skilled in working with extremely vulnerable and at times high risk clients and this commitment to her client’s has been noted and observed by a number of Judges: “I express my gratitude to Ms. Amare...without her assistance and efforts, which have gone beyond what is usual, matters would not have progressed as they have.” - HHJ Sapnara, East London Family Court 2019. More recently, in an extremely complex case wherein Genet represented a very high risk client, Recorder Delahunty sitting in the Family Court in Brighton stated in written judgement “I wish to especially acknowledge the dedication of the mother’s legal team to their lay client’s case and her care. They have represented the best qualities of the legal aid Bar in the efforts they have gone to support her and to put her case to the court”, December 2021.

Genet is committed to working in the legal aid sector and ensuring that those who have no or limited access to justice are provided such access, whether this falls within her department of Family and Child Care or across the firm as a whole.

During lockdown Genet forged connections with major domestic abuse services and offered daily pro bono hotline clinics which have resulted in those services all directly now referring work to Genet and her team. In addition, Genet has been running four women’s refuges and pro bono surgeries with various children’s centres in her local area for numerous years.

Genet is passionate about fighting injustices and giving back to the community, which is evidenced in her involvement with the Grenfell inquiry, when within hours of the fire in the Tower, due to her own local connections, Genet was helping on the ground with the communities and agencies she had an existing relationship with.

On her appointment as director, Genet said:

“Having trained with Duncan Lewis from the start of my career, I have benefited from the support of excellent Supervisors and Directors, been exposed to a varied and exciting caseload, involved in cases undertaken by other departments – such as the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. I believe Duncan Lewis is a formidable firm that enables you to reach your full potential and encourages growth and development at all levels. I look forward to a new chapter in my career at Duncan Lewis.”
