Duncan Lewis' Family and Childcare care director Emine Mehmet has been recognised with an Honorary Law Fellowship, awarded by the University of London's prestigious Royal Docks School of Business and Law. Emine’s outstanding achievement came after she recently spent several weeks supporting and mentoring students at UoE where she shared indispensable advice gleaned from her extensive experience. This cumulated in the creation of a pro bono clinic at UoE where law students gain valuable legal work experience through Emine’s guiding hand, helping prepare students for industry readiness and sow the foundations of their legal careers. The pro bono clinic provides free legal advice to the most vulnerable, assisting hundreds of people with their legal matters who would otherwise be unable to access legal advice. On top of being the largest provider of legal aid services in the UK, Duncan Lewis also places great importance on the provision of pro-bono projects and we encourage all of our lawyers to get involved. As Chairperson of the Duncan Lewis’ Pro Bono Committee, Emine is at the heart of putting our commitment to improving access to justice into practice. She dedicates a significant amount of her own time to ensuring that Duncan Lewis gives back to the community, and she currently runs 10 surgeries across her Family and Childcare team alone. Thanks to her guidance, the firm has provided lifeline services to over 70 pro bono clinics in a range of legal fields since Emine was appointed chair of the committee in 2009. To name just a few, Emine has been involved in organising monthly surgeries at Hestia, Solace and Latin American Women's Aid (LAWA). She also provides pro bono advice over the phone via Redbridge MARAC. In recognition of her unwavering dedication to assisting the most vulnerable in society, Emine has received several awards for her pro bono activities. Most notably, Emine has supported the Royal Holloway Legal Advice Centre since its opening in January 2020 which saw Duncan Lewis receive the Pro Bono award for their “outstanding commitment in support of [the] Legal Advice Centre”. We’d like to extend our huge congratulations and thanks to Emine on receiving her Honorary Fellowship and for her continuous dedication to supporting Duncan Lewis’ pro bono commitment. She is extensively experienced in the full range of privately and publicly funded (legal aid) family and childcare matters including care proceedings acting for children, whether through their guardians or direct, and parents, private law children disputes, domestic abuse matters. Emine is committed to assisting the most vulnerable and ensuring access to justice.
