Sandwell Council in the West Midlands is running a free ante-natal course in the borough from June, with four sessions covering key information to help parents-to-be prepare for the arrival of their baby.
The course is offered by Sandwell Public Health and will include healthy pregnancy advice, looking after the baby when he or she arrives, information about the birth from midwives – and the support available for parents to access in Sandwell.
Director of the Public Health Directorate at Sandwell Council, Jyoti Atri, said:
“This is an important new course, which will enable parents-to-be to get up-to-date information – and to help to make the arrival of their baby as good an experience as possible.
“The sessions will help to reduce the risks for infant deaths and low birth weight – and help parent and baby bonding.”
The course also aims to give parents-to-be the chance to meet the children centre staff, who will be on hand and offer support as the baby develops, Ms Atri added.
Sessions start in June and are running in four children centres at Tipton, Cape Hill, Rowley Springfield and Greets Green, held at different times to suit people’s lifestyles.
Parents can attend the course with a family member, friend or birthing partner and will be given all course materials free of charge. Bookings for the ante-natal course are being taken by Healthy Sandwell (0800 011 4656).
