North West Leicestershire District Council has announced that the domestic violence support charity Living Without Abuse (LWA) will benefit from the proceeds of the second-ever Coalville Colour Run charity run due to take place in September.

The 5km Coalville Colour Run will take place on Sunday, 17 September 2017 and is organised by Living Without Abuse and sponsored by North West Leicestershire District Council, along with support from a number of local businesses.

In 2016, 500 entrants raised £10,000 for the domestic abuse charity that hopes for even more invaluable support this time around, with 1,000 spaces available for runners to fill.

LWA supports men, women and children who have or who are suffering from any kind of domestic abuse – physical, sexual, emotional or financial.

The charity runs outreach support – which can include practical and emotional support, court support, financial support, housing support and resettlement.

LWA also has Freedom Programme and Recovery Tool Kit sessions to help and support victims rebuild their lives and start planning for the future.

A domestic abuse victim who received support from LWA – formerly known as Loughborough Women’s Aid – has spoken anonymously about her experiences.

“I had lived under the control of my domineering bully of a husband for most of my 45 years of marriage – and I felt that that was the way things were within a marriage. That was the case until a very kind solicitor realised I needed help.

“He asked me what had happened and I explained that my husband, after an alcoholic binge, would frequently verbally abuse me and locked me out of the house – and that this time he had made threats about my safety.

“He had phoned up my family and told them that he had locked me out and repeated the threats to them, so I assumed that this time there was no going back, as I had so many times before.

“There began my relationship with Women’s Aid and the Freedom Program run by Living Without Abuse. Those ladies are wonderful. I did not ever feel alone. We met in cafes while I was in a hotel, but I managed to find a furnished rental place. Then I found I needed to speak to them often for guidance because everything that was happening to me was at times frightening and certainly daunting.

“The things I hadn’t done myself over 45 years of marriage – paying Council Tax, television licence, utility bills and understanding and filling out forms –were very difficult for me and these ladies helped me find help and supported me every step of the way.

“Without their guidance and their understanding of all I was going through, I would have been tempted to return to the family home – where, without doubt, the abuse would have escalated… I have a new life thanks to these lovely ladies – and have managed to recommend them to others going through similar problems.”
