The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has updated its family mediation public information leaflet online.
Family mediation is recommended by the government as a means of avoiding costly and distressing court hearings in family cases, including divorce and separation or disputes between family members.
Family mediation can include discussions over arrangements for children after divorce or separation – including where children are going to live and when parents will be able to see their children.
Family mediation can also help decide on child maintenance payments, sharing finances and property such as a house, savings or pension – and dealing with any debts accrued during a marriage or civil partnership.
Family mediation is also available for same sex couples – and in cases involving international divorce and high net worth individuals.
In cases where domestic violence is an issue, family mediation may not be available.
The updated leaflet can be download at the GOV UK website.
