The London Assembly (LA) has unanimously agreed a motion on flexi-working for those with caring commitments – and is calling on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to share the good practice of the GLA and the benefits that flexible working bring to London’s businesses by ensuring a diverse, skilled workforce.

The LA says that people with caring responsibilities, or health or age-related needs, may struggle to find a quality part-time job, due to a lack of flexible working arrangements. Nearly two million people are either locked out of work or are in low-paid jobs.

Members of the London Assembly have agreed a motion supporting the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) flexi-work arrangements, based on the GLA’s commitment to flexible working arrangements in partnership with Timewise.

Fiona Twycross AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“Flexible working is essential to ensure we don’t lose the vital skills of those who need to balance their contribution in the workplace with other commitments, such as caring responsibilities.

“Far too many women in London are stuck in roles that don’t use their experience fully – we need to get childcare right so they don’t get priced out of opportunities and end up taking or staying in part-time positions simply because they can’t find affordable childcare.

“But we also need to make sure there are decent part-time jobs at all levels and that everyone gets a chance to progress. This will increase productivity and diversity at senior levels – and that can only be good for employees and employers alike.

“The more the Mayor can do to encourage flexible working practices, both here at the GLA and across London, the better.”
