Duncan Lewis, Family Solicitors, Family law solicitor Emily Reed attends the National FGM Centre Conference

Emily Reed, a solicitor within the family department attended the National Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Centre’s Conference ‘RSE: The Role of Education in Responding to FGM and other Harmful Practices’ in London. Emily participated as part of a multi-disciplinary panel on the topic of relationship and sex education in school as well as the Department of Education’s guidance that all pupils should know what FGM is and the law in relation to FGM by the end of secondary school.

In 2019, the new statutory guidance on RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) was announced, making it compulsory for schools to teach pupils about FGM and other harmful practices. The conference brought together a range of professionals from local government, the Department of Education, the National FGM Centre, the NHS, the police, local schools, and parents and survivors of FGM, to help teachers and other health and social care professionals fully understand what FGM is, how to apply that knowledge to safeguard children, how to teach about harmful practices and how to engage pupils and families on the topic.

Emily spoke as part of the panel, addressing delegates on the law in relation to FGM practices and discussed the work she has carried out with the National FGM Centre during family court matters, where young girls require protection from FGM in the form of FGM Protection orders. Additionally, she gave a presentation outlining criminal offences, mandatory report duty and FGM Protection orders, including what laws should be taught to pupils, and how pupils, parents and professionals can seek support and advice should they or someone else be a victim or at risk of FGM.

Following the conference Emily commented;

“FGM is a practice that, despite being illegal and a form of child abuse, continues to take place in the UK. It will continue to occur until young girls, and those who are responsible for their care, are educated about what FGM is, the impact it has on girls, and the laws that can protect them. It was a wonderful experience to be a part of that education process.”
