A teenager trying to be a good neighbour by signing for a parcel when his neighbour was out has described how police arrested him and took him to a police station for questioning while he was still wearing his pyjamas.

James Sutcliffe, 19, from south London signed for a parcel containing an imported poison, which had been ordered by murder suspect Kuntal Patel – who had the parcel sent to a friend’s house instead of her own, saying it was a candle for her boyfriend. As the friend was out when the parcel arrived, Mr Sutcliffe signed for it and took it in.

However, the parcel contained a lethal poison – and after the FBI and US Homeland Security informed Scotland Yard about the package, Mr Sutcliffe’s home was raided by police officers wearing biohazard suits.

He was arrested on terror charges and taken away for questioning, before being released two hours later without charges being brought.

Mr Sutcliffe says he has never received an apology.

Kuntal Patel was found guilty of acquiring the biological agent and is due to be sentenced on 7 November.

It was alleged that she had bought the toxin with the intention of poisoning her mother, who forbade her to wed the man she loved. Kuntal was, however, cleared of charges relating to trying to poison her mother.

Mr Sutcliffe has vowed never to sign for a parcel on behalf of someone else ever again.
