Police are calling for witnesses to a hit-and-run incident, in which a cyclist was knocked from his bike in London’s East End and killed.

Schoolteacher Ashad Ahmed, 32, was knocked from his cycle on Monday (24/11/14) in Commercial Road, east London. He had been cycling from his home to his parents’ house in Whitechapel when he died.

The other vehicle involved is believed to be a silver Audi A3, which was seen travelling up to 70mph. It is reported that the car may have been deliberately racing another car along Commercial Road when the incident happened.

Staging care races on public roads is an increasingly popular but dangerous and illegal past-time among some motorists.

Police have made an arrest after tracing the driver of the Audi, who was detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The man arrested in connection with Mr Ahmed’s death has been bailed until January.

Mr Ahmed was an experienced cyclist and had taken part in charity cycle rides. He was described as a devoted Muslim and family man – and leaves a wife and two young children.
