A man from Tottenham in north London who was caught fly tipping has been prosecuted and fined a total of £525, after a waste contractor for the local council witnessed him dumping vehicle parts and refuse sacks at a hotpsot for fly tipping in Haringey.
ThisislocalLondon.co.uk reports that in November 2013, Ahmet Karagez of Rothbury Road, Northumberland Park in Tottenham was seen dumping rubbish from a van in Carbunkle Passage in Tottenham.
Contractors from waste company Veolia took down his vehicle registration number and passed the details to Haringey Council, who traced Mr Karagez with the help of the Metropolitan Police.
At Tottenham Magistrates’ Court in January, Karagez admitted fly tipping and was fined £250 with £250 costs and a £25 victim surcharge.
As a result of the incident and subsequent prosecution, Karagez now has a criminal record.
After the hearing, Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Stuart McNamara said:
“Fly tipping is an unacceptable blight on our streets and we are taking action to stamp it out – including working tirelessly to engage with residents and piloting new projects such as timed collections and the fly tipping hotspots programme.
"Where necessary, we will not hesitate to bring cases to court to ensure those responsible face justice.
“We also want people to tell us when they see dumped rubbish, or see fly tipping in action, so that together we can ensure our streets are kept clean.”
