Hounslow Council Greater London has prosecuted a woman for fly tipping waste on her doorstep in Feltham.
Veronica Watson was reported to the council by residents, after fly tipping domestic waste, including a carpet, furniture and a mattress in Westmacott Drive.
Officers investigating the waste appealed for help in catching the culprit – and the council in turn appealed for information by posting messages on social media. Anonymous replies directed officers to Ms Watson’s address in Stone Crescent, Feltham.
.
Residents described seeing Ms Watson carrying goods from her house and dumping them on Westmacott Drive – others said they had seen items being thrown from her garden, over her fence and onto the pavement.
After obtaining witness statements, enforcement officers attend Ms Watson’s address with police. After initially denying she was responsible, when confronted with the evidence, Ms Watson admitted being responsible for the fly tip. She was issued with a fixed penalty notice of £400.
Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Amrit Mann, said:
“The size and scale of this fly tip is nothing short of jaw-dropping – it’s almost unbelievable that someone could dump this much stuff on the street and think they could get away with it.
“The sad part is that they did it where they live, with no consideration for other people, let alone pride for the place they call home.
“This is the first £400 fine for fly tipping that we have issued since introducing the higher fixed penalty notices.
“In this case, thankfully we had the support of responsible residents who came forward to name and shame Ms Watson’s behaviour.
“This shows how important it is to report fly tipping – the only way we can stop it from happening is by encouraging people to change their behaviour and be proud of where they live.”
Councillor Sam Christie, added:
“Everyone is responsible for keeping the borough clean – and I am very thankful to those in the community who came together to provide evidence to ensure this person was fined.
“I hope this action will deter others from dumping their rubbish on our streets.”
