A mother of four has been jailed after falsely claiming she had been raped in an attempt to gain attention from her mother.

Lisa-Jayne Samuels, 29, from Southend in Essex put a man through hell after she falsely alleged that he had raped her, the Daily Mail reports.

Samuels made a police report and even helped police construct an identikit of the man she said had raped her.

The accused – Terry Brown – was selected by Samuels as her “attacker” in an identity parade. She claimed that on October 10, 2012, he had spiked her drink and then raped her in the early hours of the morning near cliffs. She had called the police on 999 at 1am that day, claiming she had been raped. However, CCTV footage of the bar Samuels claimed to have been drinking in with the man before the attack showed no sign of her in the bar at the time she alleged she was there. Friends she said were with her did not exist, police discovered. Samuels eventually admitted she had made up the alleged rape in December 2013. She said she had seen Mr Brown on the night she claimed to have been attacked by him, but hardly knew him.

However, in the year Mr Brown was facing criminal charges for raping Samuels, he was attacked by a gang and his partner lost their baby.

When she was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court, Samuels’ own defence lawyer described her actions as “loathsome”. However, he appealed for leniency and a suspended sentence, saying she was a woman who was “homeless, intoxicated and in the grip of an addiction”.

The court heard that she had a history of making false rape claims and had also made a hoax fire call to the emergency services. The court was told she had struggle with drug addiction and alcohol abuse.

Samuels pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was jailed by the court for 20 months.

Recorder Anthony Abell told Samuels in court:

“Rape is one of the most serious and repulsive crimes there is – a false allegation of rape can have dreadful consequences on the innocent person who has committed no crime whatsoever.

“It seems your initial call to the police was an impulsive act, but you persisted in it – you made an e-fit and identified your supposed attacker in a line up: that was not impulsive.

“I have a duty to the public – meaning your sentence must be immediate and must be of some length. “
