The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has announced that it is committed to protecting and investing in services for residents with drug and alcohol problems.

In a bid to further improve the service used by some of the most vulnerable people in the community, the council is entering into a contract with Cranstoun and with the Claremont and Holyport Practice, with effect from April.

A major improvement will be the extension of opening hours at the drug and alcohol service in Maidenhead, making it easier for residents with drug and alcohol problems to access help. In addition, a Windsor prescribing service is to be introduced.

Llead member for adult services and health, Councillor David Coppinger, said:

“This new contract means we can offer an even better and broader service to residents looking to turn their lives around. At the same time, it is also more efficient and cost effective – this is thanks to an in-depth review of the previous drug and alcohol service provision and what could be done to improve it.

“Key to this is ensuring the various council teams – including mental health, public health and housing – work together to provide a well-rounded plan that meets the individual needs of our residents.”

Principal member for public health and communications, Cllr Stuart Carroll, added:

“We are investing further in this service, which is one of our key public health priorities – as a council, we are committed to protecting our most vulnerable residents and public health interventions, such as drugs and alcohol, are central to building a borough for everyone.

“Through this service, we are enhancing our public health offer – and mental health is absolutely central given the critical interdependencies.

“The renewed service will offer additional key elements to support residents, including more effective signposting and integration to other health and mental health services across the borough.

“We are also committed to raising awareness of mental health issues as part of our active participation in the Brighter Berkshire 2017 campaign.”

Council initiatives to help the homeless have also been factored in because for some service users drug and alcohol problems are accompanied by homelessness.

Leader of the council and lead member for housing, Cllr Simon Dudley, said:

“We have been taking action to ensure no resident of the borough finds themselves without a place to sleep – but for many homeless people, a roof over their head is just the first step and we hope that by coordinating these services we will be able to help them make positive changes in their lives.”
