Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, West Midlands gang may have sentences for supplying guns increased

The Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, has referred the sentences of 14 members of a Birmingham gang to the Court of Appeal, on the grounds they were too lenient.

The offenders were linked to Birmingham’s Burger Bar gang and were sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court in November, after being convicted of supplying guns to criminal gangs around the country.

They were caught trafficking a number of weapons and ammunition, including handguns, a sawn-off shotgun and a MAC 10 machine gun.

The head of the group was Nosakhere Stephenson and all the offenders were charged for offences which included six counts of conspiracy to transfer prohibited weapons and ammunition.

The Solicitor General today referred the sentences of all offenders to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. Mr Buckland said:

“After careful consideration of the details of these cases, I decided to refer these sentences to the Court of Appeal, due to the serious nature of the offences concerned.

“These were professional criminals running a sophisticated operation which involved a high degree of planning. The offences had a terrible impact on those who were caught up in violence further down the line.

“It is now a matter for the Court to determine whether the sentences should be increased.”
