Trading Standards officers in Nuneaton Warwickshire say they have seized more illegal cigarettes and tobacco products from traders in the area and are urging genuine Nuneaton and Bedworth retailers to come forward and report the effect the sale of illegal tobacco is having on their businesses.

Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Officers have made a series of unannounced visits to retailers in the area, which uncovered the sale of illegal tobacco products.

Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Councillor Howard Roberts, said:

“We want Nuneaton and Bedworth businesses that are being adversely affected by the illegal trade in counterfeit and non-duty paid tobacco and cigarettes to contact Warwickshire Trading Standards.

“In doing so, we hope to form a better picture of how genuine traders serving local communities are losing out – and at the same time, gather evidence that will help us take more targeted action against these illegal sellers.”

The council said that sale of illegal tobacco both damaged the profits of genuine local businesses – and robbed the Treasury of tax revenue that could be spent on schools and hospitals.

Sellers of illegal tobacco are also more likely to sell to children and ignore age-restricted sale laws designed to discourage young people from smoking.
