Hounslow Council in Greater London has “named and shamed” 14 people who failed to pay fines for littering offences.
The initial £80 fines issued could have been settled for £50 if paid in within ten days – however, when the fines went unpaid, the council took court action and the penalties were increased to £150, a 500%-plus increase in the original fine.
The court also ordered that those who had failed to pay the fines must also pay court costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £20 – bringing the total fine to £270.
Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Amrit Mann, said:
“We will never apologise for being tough on those who think it’s okay to litter, dump rubbish or undertake other anti-social behaviour – the message is clear, if you wouldn’t do it in your home, don’t do it on our streets.
“If you receive a fine, do the right thing – pay up as soon as possible and learn from your mistakes. If you don’t, we won’t hesitate to take further action, as we have done in these cases.”
