Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, Shadow Justice Secretary pledges reform of criminal Legal Aid under Labour government

Shadow Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan has said that a Labour government would undertake an immediate review of how Legal Aid for criminal cases is procured – and has accused the coalition government of “making a pig’s ear” of access to justice.

The Law Society Gazette reports that Mr Khan said that a Labour government would abolish the two-tier system of criminal Legal Aid contracts – and will review the proposed further 8.75% cut in Legal Aid fees for criminal cases due to be implemented in July this year.

In the Commons last week, Mr Khan also challenged the coalition’s Secretary of State for Justice Chris Grayling on why members of the justice system “think so little of him?”

Mr Grayling – whose swingeing Legal Aid cuts have provoked a backlash among lawyers, campaign groups and members of the public – responded by saying that one leading member of the justice system had told him:

“Do you know, I may not agree with your policies, but at least you’ve got some: the other party hasn’t got any.”

Responding to Mr Khan’s pledges to review Legal Aid reforms for criminal cases if Labour comes to power in May, president of the Law Society, Andrew Caplen welcomed “any opportunity for review and the restoration of access to justice for all”.
