A new study by Carrot Car Insurance has found that one in eight young drivers is not aware of a change in the law surrounding drug-driving.

From April, police forces have able to stop drivers to test for drug use using a drugalyser test similar to a breathalyser.

The device can test for cocaine and cannabis and prescription drugs such as Clonazepam, Diazepam, Morphine, Temazepam and Rohypnol – also known as the “date rape” drug.
Researchers at Carrot Insurance found that one in five young drivers was unaware that some prescription drugs can cause a motorist to be unfit to drive.

Of those surveyed for the study, only 2.4% knew that Rohypnol was a banned drug.

Researchers also found that one-quarter of young drivers questioned said they knew someone who had driven while under the influence of drugs.

Drug-driving offences can lead to a minimum one-year driving ban and a six- month prison sentence. Sentences would be tougher if another party was killed or injured as a result of drug-driving.

Product Director for Carrot Car Insurance, Ed Rochfort, said:
“Young driver safety has always been at the core of Carrot’s beliefs – and we welcome any new measures that help make the roads a safer place for all motorists.

“However, it’s clear from our research that the change in laws around drug- driving has left motorists confused and vulnerable – especially when it comes to the reclassification of some prescription medicines.

“More should be done to educate drivers beyond the initial campaign launched by Think!, to ensure motorists are better equipped to understand all points of the law so they are not at risk of breaking it.”
