Outcry over six-year jail term for new father who defended his own mother from abusive father (12 January 2015)

The mother of a 22-year-old man jailed for six years by Teesside Crown Court for a hammer attack on his abusive father has begged the court to release her son, saying that his actions saved her from another violent attack from her husband.
The Daily Mail reports that Ben Wilson from Billingham in County Durham admitted wounding with intent to cause GBH when he attacked his 46-year-old father with a lump hammer.
However, his 43-year-old mother Tracey Wilson says she is proud of her son for defending her.
An online petition to have Ben freed has attracted 40,000 signatures so far. He has recently become a father for the first time himself.
It is alleged that his own father Craig Wilson has a history or violent assaults on his wife – Ben’s mother – mother linked to alcohol-use. He has already served a two-year prison sentence for domestic assaults on his wife – and was described in court as a “violent nasty drunk” and a “Jekyll and Hyde” character.
On New Year’s Eve in 2007, he placed his hands round his wife’s throat so tightly that that her eyes bled and she lost consciousness.
The court at Teesside was told that Ben Wilson had grown up “an atmosphere of violence, fear and intimidation” – and was subjected to violence himself at home.
However, the judge jailed him for six years for the assault on his father.
