Newcastle Trading Standards has seized counterfeit clothes worth £36,000 after receiving a tip off from a member of the public.
Trading Standards officers raided an address in the city’s Byker area and recovered 131 items, including jeans and t-shirts branded Moschino, D-Squared, Philip Plein, Nike and Adidas. The recommended retail value was estimated at £36,000, with a street value of around £6,000.
Trading Standards said it was believed that the items were imported from abroad – and were being sold as genuine articles over the Internet. Parcels of items were also seized, which were destined for addresses around the UK.
Newcastle Council’s Cabinet Member Councillor Stephen Powers said:
“I am delighted that these items have now been prevented from getting onto our streets.
“It’s important that the consumer is protected and legitimate businesses are not undercut by rogue traders selling fake goods – I am grateful to the member of the public who contacted our Trading Standards team.
“The council always acts on information received, so people can report their suspicions in the knowledge that we will investigate and prosecute where possible.”
Trading Standards manager, David Ellerington, added:
“The complaint came from a seller on eBay, so we followed it up with a visit to a residential address.
“It’s very satisfying to seize a haul as big as this – and we will investigate further with a view to bringing a prosecution.”
