Did you know that the Government will be introducing new court fees for anyone convicted of a criminal offence? This will include someone found guilty after a trial or someone who is thinking of pleading guilty.
Although there have been costs in criminal cases, there have never been court fees in the criminal courts before and no-one had to stand trial with the fear of paying for the courts running costs. Unlike the civil courts you cannot apply for a fee remission and there are very few people who will not have to pay. You could be stung with court fees even if you plead guilty and they could be as much as £1200! This would be in addition to the prosecution costs and the victim surcharge. We believe that the courts should be focused on justice rather than looking to make a profit.
If you have been hit with these fees or about to go to court and are worried about these fees, perhaps because you are on benefits or have a low income, or you know someone who is in this situation, then please contact the Crime Team and ask to speak to Mr Rubin Italia or Mrs Abigail Fogg to discuss this further.
