Nearly half of all drivers break traffic laws (29 April 2015)

A new poll from road safety charity Brake and insurers Direct Line has revealed that nearly half (49%) of all motorists break traffic laws if they think they can get away with doing so – and male drivers are twice as likely as women drivers to break the law because they feel they can get away with it.

The survey found that although drivers feel safer with their own skills than 10 years ago, their biggest road safety concern is other motorists using mobile phones behind the wheel.

However, 69% felt they were safer drivers than others – and 58% of young motorists questioned felt they were safer than other drivers.

When drivers were asked about unsafe driving they had witnessed in other drivers in the last year, they were most concerned about other motorists being distracted behind the wheel – including by mobile phone use – followed by tailgating, speeding and motorists taking risks when overtaking.

Spokeswoman for Brake, Julie Townsend, said that the figures show that lawbreaking on Britain’s roads is not confined to a minority of motorists – but is endemic:

“For whatever reason, many seem to feel they are beyond the law – or that traffic laws are somehow optional,” Ms Townsend said.

”This represents a failure by government to ensure traffic policing is receiving adequate priority – and to make clear the importance and legitimacy of traffic laws,” she added.

Director of motor insurance at Direct Line, Rob Miles, said:

“Drivers continue to flout the rules of the road without realising the devastating impact their actions can have.

“Traffic laws are there for a reason – and breaking them puts lives at risk.”
