A joint operation between Scotland Yard, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and French customs has prevented cocaine worth £40 million reaching the streets of London.
The Evening Standard newspaper reports that French customs officers in the Caribbean seized a yacht off the coast of Martinique last Monday (03/11/14) and arrested two men on board the SY Hygeia Of Halsa, which is registered in the UK.
Customs officials recovered 250kg of cocaine on board the yacht, with an estimated street value of £30-£40m.
Gang members and the yacht were tracked by authorities in Venezuela, the Eastern Caribbean, Jamaica and the USA.
In London, detectives are investigating a group suspected of being involved in organised crime, which has links to the Caribbean – and may be behind the large-scale import of Class A drugs such as cocaine into the UK.
Detective Superintendent Neil Thompson from the Metropolitan Police’s Organised Crime Command said:
“The drugs recovered would have been distributed throughout the streets of London and beyond, generating further criminality and fuelling gang activity.
“These arrests show there is no criminal that is beyond our reach – if you deal in drugs in any scale, we will find you, arrest you and you will face the consequences of your actions.”
The Head of International Operations at the National Crime Agency, Hank Cole, said:
“We have stopped a huge consignment of cocaine close to source.
“Our investigation into the organised crime network involved in this attempt continues.
“We have no doubt that without this intervention, the drugs would have ended up on the streets, where – after being cut – they would have had a likely potential value of £30 million to £40 million.”
