The Metropolitan Police are to be investigated following allegations that a paedophile ring was covered up because senior police officers and MPs were involved.

The Daily Mail reports that the allegations date back to the 1970s and involve one allegation that police officers failed to prosecute a leading MP over a “sex party” involving young boys.

It is also alleged that the names of high-profile suspects were removed from witness statements – and a senior Conservative MP forced police officers to drop an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations.

Scotland Yard is accused of covering up 14 incidents of child sex abuse carried out by wellknown public figures – and police allegedly “shut down” inquiries into cases of sexual abuse which involved public figures who were considered to be “untouchable”.

The investigation echoes the Jimmy Savile scandal, whose celebrity led to people ignoring his predatory sexual activities involving young adults and children from the 1960s onwards.

The Metropolitan Police Service has referred the latest allegations of police cover-ups in allegations of child sexual abuse to the police watchdog for a full investigation.

As a result, five former Metropolitan Police chief commissioners could be interviewed.

There has been a backlash over the fact that the inquiry will be overseen by the Metropolitan Police, however. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has offered reassurances that it will closely monitor the work of investigating officers.

Labour MP Tom Watson first raised concerns about historic cases of child sex abuse in October 2012, which were investigated by detectives who went on to discover a “complex web” of allegations involving senior politicians and other public figures in positions of authority in the 1970s.

The inquiry prompted by Mr Watson’s concerns – known as Operation Fairbank – found “horrifying allegations” from child victims that their complaints were ignored or covered up.

The allegations involve claims that police deliberately stalled their inquiries into Elm Guest House in Barnes, southwest London – where dozens of young boys were allegedly abused by wellknown public figures, including MPs and civil servants. It is reported two undercover police officers also sexually abused a young boy during a police raid at Elm Guest House.

Police officers are also accused of failing to put a stop to sex parties involving children at the luxury Dolphin Square housing estate in Pimlico, south London, after public figures allegedly intervened in the police inquiry.

Sarah Green from the IPCC said that police and IPCC officials were examining claims that evidence of allegations of child sex abuse in the 1970s was suppressed – with investigations “hindered and halted” and offences covered up.
