Manchester woman convicted after fraudulently claiming housing benefits (2 January 2014)

A woman from Manchester has been convicted of benefit fraud after failing to disclose the correct details about her housing situation to local housing authorities.
Nineteen-year-old Terri Glancy claimed housing benefit from Trafford Council over a 12-month period despite vacating her property at Madison Apartments in Old Trafford and moving to nearby Ancoats last year.
Miss Glancy continued to receive benefits while at her new address and as a result, was overpaid in excess of £1,400 between August and November 2012. A council counter fraud investigation eventually exposed her late last year when officers visited her previous Old Trafford apartment and found that she had left.
Miss Glancy was sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge in a hearing at Trafford Magistrates earlier this week. In addition to the entire amount she illegitimately gained from Trafford Council, she will also have to pay a £50 sum to cover prosecution costs.
Commenting on the case, Trafford Council director of finance, Ian Duncan said: “It is important that people make sure they declare all information relevant to their claim and let us know if their circumstances change at any time. Failing to do so could see them receiving benefits they are not entitled to and being prosecuted as well.”
