Nicholas Peppiatt, 30, was arrested following an incident last Tuesday (10/06/14) and appeared in court on Thursday.
The charges relate to an assault on a woman in her twenties near the River Gannel. The victim was taken to hospital with a head injury, after police officers were called to the scene at around 2am by a member of the public. The victim is being assisted by specially trained police officers, local publisher the Falmouth Packet reports.
A 44-year-old man was arrested and bailed until August 5, while Peppiatt was arrested later and held in custody until his appearance at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face charges.
Police are calling for witnesses to the incident or anyone who was in the area of the River Gannel in the early hours of the morning on 10 June and who may have witnessed something of relevance.
Newquay neighbourhood team leader Sergeant James Honeywill said:
“Police responded very quickly to this incident – and within 12 hours of initial report, two suspects had been arrested.
“We would like to reassure the public that this type of incident is extremely rare in Cornwall – and that Newquay remains a safe place to live, work and visit.”
BBC News reports that following his appearance at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Peppiatt was charged with rape and was remanded in custody to appear before Truro Crown Court on July 8.
He was also charge with sexual assault, kidnap, robbery and perverting the course of justice.
