Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, MP calls for longer prison sentences for repeat drug offenders

Figures revealed in response to a Parliamentary question tabled by Conservative MP Philip Davies have revealed that 68% of offenders jailed immediately after sentencing for a drugs conviction have an average of ten previous convictions – including those convicted of offences involving Class A drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine.

Mr Davies is calling for longer sentences to make sure that offenders have had time to deal with their drug addiction before being released back into society.

In 2014, a total of 807 out of 1,242 drug offenders jailed immediately after trial in England and Wales were found to have ten or more previous convictions.

Labour has attacked the figures, saying they show the coalition government’s reforms to the justice system are failing.

Shadow Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan said:

“People looking at these figures will question whether the justice system – after five years of a Tory and LibDem government – is up to scratch.

“It is a scandal that so many offenders on drug charges are committing multiple offences.”

The figures show that, out of 585 offenders jailed immediately after sentencing on charges relating to Class A drugs, a total of 398 had ten or more previous convictions – and 94 had between six and ten previous convictions.

Mr Philips said that, if an offender were jailed for six months at a magistrates’ court, they might be released after just three months, which was not sufficient time for them to address their drug addiction before being released back into the community.
