A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to life for the brutal murder of his mother’s boyfriend.
On 5 March 2017 in York, Daniel Reed launched an alcohol-fuelled, frenzied attack on Shaun Skelton.
Principal Crown Advocate at Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Yorkshire and Humberside, Jonathan Sharp, said:
“Armed with a hammer and a screwdriver, he inflicted 70 separate injuries on his victim – including 17 knife wounds and 15 blows to the head, leaving his victim with a shattered skull and gaping injuries to his neck.
“Reed's motivation appears to have been based on nothing more than personal dislike, at a time when he was about to be recalled to prison and his relationship was in difficulty.
“The evidence presented to the CPS in this case was overwhelming – and today Reed has pleaded guilty to murder and has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
“Our thoughts remain with Shaun Skelton's family and friends, as they come to terms with their tragic loss.”
Reed will serve a minimum of 24 years in jail for the murder.
A second defendant was sentenced to 18 months in jail, suspended for two years, and ten hours' unpaid work, after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to assisting an offender.
