The victim has been named as 34-year-old Christopher Foster from Walworth in southeast London. Mr Foster was unmarried with a four-year-old daughter.
It is reported he was stabbed by a gang armed with baseball bats and at least one knife as he stood smoking in an alleyway by St Christopher’s Inn in Borough High Street, Southwark on Friday (29/11/13) night. The attack took place at 11.45pm.
Mr Foster was taken by ambulance to Whitechapel’s Royal London Hospital in east London, where he was pronounced dead.
It is thought there were seven in the gang which attacked Mr Foster, who worked in the administration department of a firm of lawyers.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place today at Greenwich Public Mortuary.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the attack – or anyone who may have seen the gang – to contact the police incident room on 020 8345 3865, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The senior officer in charge of the case, Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin, said:
“I am keen to identify a group of males who were seen running from St Christopher's Inn along Borough High Street towards Elephant and Castle immediately after the stabbing.”
Police think Mr Foster may have been stabbed as a result of mistaken identity.
