A former district judge and his assistant who defrauded nearly £1 million from clients at their law firm have been jailed at Southwark Crown Court.
On 27th February, Simon Kenny, 60, was jailed after being convicted of two counts of fraud, following a prosecution brought by the CPS Specialist Fraud Division at Southwark Crown Court.
Kenny and his assistant Emma Coats, 47, were both jailed for six years after being convicted of two counts of fraud, which included obtaining £85,000 from the will of a deceased woman.
The trial heard how Kenny and Coates transferred money to themselves from the accounts of CK Solicitors in West Sussex over several years – Coates spent the proceeds on mortgage payments and an expensive Caribbean holiday.
Deputy Head of the CPS Specialist Fraud Division, Naheed Hussain, said:
“The prosecution showed how Simon Kenny and Emma Coates fraudulently took five-figure sums from their firm's clients, including £85,000 from the will of an elderly woman. Through detailed analysis of the financial transactions, prosecutors and investigators were able to present a compelling case to the jury, which resulted in these convictions.”
