A woman who ransacked a dementia sufferer’s home and cashed in nearly £20,000-worth of Premium Bonds she found has been allowed to repay just £5 by a court in South Wales.
Kelly Billen, 35, broke into Richard Jones’ home in Hirwaun, Rrhonda Cynon Taff while he was away, a jury at Methyr Tydfil Crown Court was told.
She ransacked her 94-year-old neighbour’s home – and took his Premium Bonds, which she cashed for £19,426.
The court heard that Billen was formerly a care worker and had an addiction to amphetamines.
Billen’s defence lawyer told the court:
"Debts were increasing, she relied more on amphetamine – and that is frankly what swallowed her."
The court jailed Billen for three years and three months, after she pleaded guilty to burglary and eight counts of fraud.
The court also told her that if she did not repay £5 within six months, she would be sentenced to a further seven days in jail.
Mr Jones is now living in a care home and is unaware of the theft from his home.
