Jail for romance fraud conman who netted £120,000 from victims (4 September 2015)

A conman who cheated women out of £120,000 in a romance fraud scam has been jailed at Birmingham Crown Court.
Unemployed Ammar Haider, 28, from Acocks Green in Birmingham met his victims on dating websites, where he pretended to be a trainee airline pilot.
Haider – who is married with two children – devised a number of stories with the intention of defrauding women he met online.
His first victim was a woman from Sheffield whom he took on holiday to Austria, before telling her he needed money to pay for his pilot’s licence.
Haider told another woman from Nottingham that his sister needed pioneering medical treatment in the US for tuberculosis.
He also met a woman from Edinburgh through the dating website singlemuslims.com – and told her he had been arrested in Dubai and needed £45,000 for bail money. She transferred £30,000 to Haider’s account, but became suspicious after she contacted the Dubai Embassy and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office about Haider.
In an initial interview, he told police that he knew the woman – and that they had willingly given him money. However, West Midlands Police's Economic Crime Unit found Haider had taken money from other victims, and had bullied them into remaining silent.
Haider was jailed for five years after being convicted of three counts of fraud.
