Preston Crown Court has jailed four men for more than 56 years for carrying out an armed robbery at a family home.

On 11 February 2014, the gang burst into a house in Longridge shortly after 4.30pm, when the homeowner and her two young sons were at home.

They demanded access to two safes, threatened the family with knives and a sledgehammer – and tied them up with dressing gown cords, before barricading them in the bathroom while they raided the house.

The gang made off with fourteen firearms, ammunition, cash, jewellery and personal documents.

Scott Peters was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, Tom Yeung was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment with an extended licence period of two years, Michael White was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment with an extended licence period of four years – and Jake Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years.

The gang was also sentenced at the same time to additional terms of imprisonment for offences outside the northwest.

After sentencing, Senior Crown Prosecutor for North West CPS, Claire Hilton, said:

“This ruthless organised crime gang have been jailed for significant lengths of time for carrying out a deplorable attack on a mother and two young children within their family home.

“Scott Peters had prior knowledge of the layout of the house and the contents of the two safes, while Michael White recruited the other conspirators – Tom Yeung and Jake Smith.

“The gang travelled to the house in a two-car convoy – one from Liverpool and the other from Preston.

“Guns are a coveted and extremely valuable commodity with organised crime gangs – this gang were more than prepared to use violence as they terrorised the family in order to get what they wanted.

“Both of the boys were grabbed – the mother had a knife held to her throat and was punched and hit around the head. They were all then tied up with dressing gown cords and barricaded in the bathroom with a wardrobe, in order for the gang to have free rein to raid the house.

“This was a traumatic ordeal for the family – the mother genuinely feared for hers and her sons' lives.

“The defendants showed utter disregard for the long lasting consequences this robbery would have on her and her young children, in order to satisfy their greed.

“I sincerely hope that these sentences bring them a sense of justice, enabling them to move on with their lives.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure within their own homes – and the Crown Prosecution Service is dedicated towards bringing organised crime gangs to justice.

“We will continue to work with the police and other agencies to build strong prosecution cases and bring those responsible for committing such offences before the courts.”
