A man who wrongly claimed benefits over a 19-month period has been prosecuted for failing to declare a change in his circumstances while receiving Housing Benefit.
Mark Allen, 46, of Filigree Close in South Normanton, Derbyshire claimed more than £2,200 in benefits he was not entitled to.
An investigation was launched after Bolsover Council in Derbyshire received information from a Department for Work and Pensions’ data-matching exercise, which matches against Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs’ tax records.
It was discovered that Allen had received more than £2,200 in Housing Benefit between 8 July 2013 and 2 February 2015, after he failed to declare a change in employment.
At North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court, Allen pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 112 of The Social Security Administration Act 1992.
He was ordered to pay a fine of £117, costs of £100 and a £20 victim surcharge.
Allen will also have to repay to money he wrongly received in Housing Benefit.
