Reading Crown Court has jailed a man for 11 years after he was convicted of the attempted murder of another man in Thatcham.

In November 2015, Qiang Gao, 39, of Acorn Drive in Thatcham was found guilty of attempted murder by a unanimous jury, after a one-week trial at Reading Crown Court.

The court heard that, on 28 May 2015 at around 1pm, Gao had an altercation with a 40-year-old man known to him in a takeaway restaurant situated on the High Street in Thatcham.

During the ensuing fight, Gao struck the man with a meat cleaver and the victim sustained a deep laceration to his forehead and the back of his head – as well as a fractured skull and a laceration to his left shoulder. Goa also partially severed the man’s finger in the attack.

The victim was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxfordshire for treatment.

During the fight, Gao sustained a cut to his arm and was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment.

After sentencing, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Adrian Foster, said:

“Gao answered no comment during his police interview – and subsequently denied attempted murder, claiming self-defence – but was found guilty by a jury on 20 November 2015, after a five-day trial at Reading Crown Court, despite his denials.

“We have worked closely with Thames Valley Police since this investigation was launched – and as a result of the hard work and diligence of the prosecution team, a just outcome has been achieved.

“The CPS takes all allegations of violence seriously and will continue to vigorously prosecute all such offenders.”
