Eight arrested after police find £70m worth of cocaine at Tilbury Docks (23 July 2015)

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Special Intelligence Section have arrested eight people, after seizing 200 kilos of cocaine with a street value of more than £70 million at Tilbury Docks in Essex.
Detectives arrested three people whom they found hiding in undergrowth, after a Ford Transit van was stopped by officers. Police arrested two men at the scene when the van was stopped.
The Evening Standard reports the eight suspects were arrested in connection with drugs possession and trafficking Class A drugs, described as being high purity cocaine shipped in blocks and stashed in holdalls in the boot of a white minicab – one of those arrested was a 29-year-old minicab driver.
Police have also raided two addresses in Essex and arrested a 30-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man.
All eights suspects are being held at an east London police station.
Meanwhile, police commissioners in Derbyshire and Durham have announced that they will no longer be targeting people who grow cannabis for their own personal use – adding that the police would prioritise going after criminal gangs and those who are involved in organised crime or violent crime, including domestic abuse.
