Ealing Council has announced that officers from its safer communities team have obtained an “exceptionally robust” Suspended Possession Order (SPO) to tackle a household in the borough known as a centre for drug dealing.
The council reports that tenant Sonia Embden of Marina Court, Marnham Crescent in Greenford received an open-ended SPO at Brentford County Court on Thursday, 26 February.
Embden accepted the order without challenging it – and Ealing Council was also awarded full costs of £7,000 by the court.
Council officers pushed for a “uniquely forceful” court order, after incidents in which both the police and officers from the council’s safer communities team were called upon to attend the premises in Greenford, in response to drug dealing involving Embden’s two sons.
A police warrant was executed at the property in 2014 – and although Embden had said that her sons had left the property to live elsewhere, this turned out not to be the case.
The council said the criminal activity at the premises had caused a significant nuisance to other residents.
The open-ended SPO bans Embden’s sons from residing at or visiting the property – and also forbids Embden from allowing visitors to do anything that could cause a nuisance or annoyance to neighbours while she is a tenant.
The SPO also prevents Embden ever applying to buy her council home under Right to Buy.
Ealing Council’s cabinet member for community services and safety, Councillor Ranjit Dheer, said:
“This is a particularly good example of a unique enforcement order that allows us to manage and eliminate criminal activity in a household, without making the tenant homeless.”
