We are pleased to announce that we are extending our reach by establishing a new criminal defence team in our Birmingham office. Led by director Nicholas De Freitas, the team consists of solicitor Sat Bains and caseworker Lee Piggott both of whom have extensive experience in handling a wide range of criminal defence matters.
Sat Bains has over 12 years of criminal defence experience, six of which are post-qualification. She is both police station accredited and a Higher Courts Advocate allowing her to assist clients from their initial arrest through to trial at the high courts. With significant experience handling cases ranging from road traffic offences, assaults, and theft, to murder, rape, kidnapping, MTIC fraud, conspiracy to supply drugs and terrorism, Sat brings a wealth of valuable expertise to the team and has experienced success in complex and high-profile matters across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Caseworker Lee Piggott also has notable experience representing clients at Birmingham Crown Court with her eye for forensic detail and use of expert reports attributing to success in a murder and manslaughter case. A police station representative, she assists clients at police stations with a variety of matters including assaults, drug and trafficking offences, sexual offences and rape, burglary, fraud and murder.
With two experienced lawyers at the forefront of this new team, we hope that the Birmingham criminal defence department will grow and flourish, matching the success of our London based team which is ranked as a Band 1 department in the 2019 edition of Chambers & Partners. The team is also ranked in The Legal 500 where it is described as “…a busy firm, cornering the market in legally aided, general crime’. It is adept at handling cases of serious crime such as drugs importation, fraud, kidnap, immigration and gang-related offences.” Additionally, Director Rubin Italia is ranked as a ‘Leading Individual’ by Chambers & Partners and is a ‘recommended lawyer’ in the Legal 500 alongside Dalston based criminal defence director, Hardeep Dhaliwal.
Harrow based criminal defence director Nicholas De Freitas will be supervising the progress of the team. With over 10 years of criminal defence experience and a particular expertise in handling cases involving violent offences, Nicholas is a dynamic lawyer and sets a strong precedent for those working under his supervision.
The team will offer expert and professional advice in relation to a number of criminal defence matters including criminal appeals, fraud, extradition, confiscation, sexual offences, terrorism, violent crime and other general crime matters for those in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.
The Birmingham office also houses our public law, housing, childcare, and family departments. With 30 years of housing law experience, Lorick Winarskie leads a team of solicitors, trainees and caseworkers specialising in a wide range of housing law matters from homelessness and disrepair to landlord-tenant disputes and eviction.
The family department – led by Legal 500 recommended lawyers Krina Parmar and Richard Gray - is ranked as a band three department in the 2019 edition of The Legal 500 for its ‘expertise in matrimonial and children cases, with notable strengths in cross-border disputes.’
Leading the public law department is Legal 500 recommended lawyer Ahmed Aydeed, who, as the youngest appointed director at Duncan Lewis Solicitors, continues to be at the forefront in the battle against the unlawful practices employed in immigration detention today. In October 2018 he was highly commended for Human Rights Lawyer of the Year at the 2018 Law Society Excellence Awards, a year after winning Junior Lawyer of the Year at the 2017 awards and just a few months after he was a finalist at the Birmingham Law Society Awards for Partner of the Year.
