Daventry Council warns residents to beware Council Tax rebate fraudsters (9 November 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, Daventry Council warns residents to beware Council Tax rebate fraudsters

Daventry Council is warning residents about a phone scam targeting people by telling them they are due a Council Tax rebate.

The council says fraudsters have been phoning victims, telling them that they have been placed in the wrong Council Tax bracket for a number of years and are entitled to a rebate.

Typically, they say the rebate would be worth around £7,000.

However, once the victim is convinced the caller is from the council, the fraudster tells them that, in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an administration fee in advance, which varies between £60 and £350.

The victim provides the details and makes the payment – but then is no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone.

When they phone the council about the rebate and the fact that they are in the wrong tax bracket, the council will confirm that they know nothing about it and that they have been contacted by fraudsters.

The fraudsters have been targeting both male and female victims, mainly those who are aged 60 and over.

The council is warning that no legitimate agency would ask for an administration fee to process a rebate – and is advising people to hang up if they suspect the caller may be trying to obtain money fraudulently.

The council advises that it is necessary to keep the phone on the hook for a period of time after hanging up, rather than use it again immediately, as the fraudster might not have put the phone down, leaving the telephone line open.

Any suspicious calls which might have been made by someone trying to obtain money fraudulently should be reported to the police by telephone on 0300 123 2040 – or online at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud.
