A convicted criminal who as a teenager was described as a “one-boy crime wave” has avoided having to repay £26,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act, after he told Nottingham Crown Court the money had been stolen.

The Mail on Sunday reports that Declan Madigan, now aged 27, has one hundred arrests for violence, car theft and burglary – and was jailed in 2013 for a drive-by shooting and three drugs offences.

He had £50,000 in his bank account and at home, but will avoid having to repay £26,000 of the money he made from crime after claiming it had been stolen from under his kitchen sink.

He was convicted of a drive-by shooting last year and given an 11-year sentence – despite having been paralysed from the waist down in a previous car crash.

He will have to repay £22,762 of the estimated £47,000 he made from crime, after first telling the court that the rest of the money had been stolen by masked robbers, before changing his story and saying a carer had taken it from under the kitchen sink at his home.

Madigan was the youngest person in the UK to be handed an ASBO, which he was given at the age of 14 in 2000.
