Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, CPS commends victim in rape case, after three men are given 27 years in jail for gang rape

Warwick Crown Court as jailed three Coventry men convicted on gang rape charges.

The court heard that, on 27 January 2016, the victim visited the Grosvenor Casino at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry for a social evening. At around 11pm, she left the casino and met Calin Lacatus, 28 – following a chat, he agreed to give the victim a lift home.

As the victim got into a Volkswagen Golf with Lacatus, they were joined in the car by 21-year-old Timotei Baran and 28-year-old Constantin Vila.

While the vehicle was driven around Coventry, the victim was prevented from leaving the car and was sexually assaulted by the defendants, who then drove to a location where the victim was raped.

She eventually managed to escape and called a friend, who managed to locate her and drive her back to the casino, where the police were contacted.

Following a three-week trial at Warwick Crown Court, all three defendants were found guilty.

Calin Lacatus was convicted on three counts involving rape, false imprisonment, sexual assault and assault by penetration and was sentenced to a total of ten years' imprisonment.

Timotei Baran was convicted of rape, as well as sexual assault and assault by penetration and was sentenced to a total of nine years' imprisonment.

Constantin Vila was convicted of rape and two charges of sexual assault and was sentenced to a total of eight years' imprisonment.

All three defendants have also been placed on to the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

After sentencing, Senior Crown Prosecutor from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, Jonathan Kelleher, said:

“These defendants are dangerous sexual predators, who preyed on a vulnerable woman.

“They subjected the victim to a horrendous sexual assault, after luring her into their car under the pretence of giving her a lift home.

“We would like to take this opportunity of commending the victim for her support and helping us to bring these three men to justice.”
