Bailiffs may be used to beat benefit fraud (14 March 2014)

Downing Street has announced proposals to tackle benefit fraud by removing luxury items like cars and computers or televisions from the homes of those found to be fraudulently claiming benefits.

The current system enables benefits to be repaid if a claimant is found to have claimed more than they are entitled to – for example, if they claimed benefits and also had an income from undeclared work, or fraudulently claimed disability benefits by claiming to have a more serious disability than was the case.

Claiming benefits in a false name or for two different addresses is also considered benefit fraud – and in some cases a jail sentence may be handed down by the court.

The plan to try and deter claimants from making fraudulent benefit claims by seizing goods to repay any overpayment is the latest attempt by the government to try and claw back some of the £1.2 billion overpaid to benefits claimants every year.

Under their Jobseeker’s contract, a claimant has a duty to declare any change in their circumstances – including any work carried out while in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or if they move in with a partner.

The new proposal would only target luxury goods in a claimant’s household and not essential items or items of low value.

A Downing Street spokesman said:

“We want to end the something-for-nothing culture – and deliver for people who want to work hard and play by the rules.
“Getting the welfare budget under control is a key part of our long-term plan for the economy.”
